Where to stay in Gunpo
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Sanbon New Town is where the rooms are. The commercial core gathers around a pedestrian street of culture that the city counts among its eight scenic locations, and a stay there keeps the shops, the food and the subway within one short walk of each other. Surisan changes the day rather than the address.
The mountain stands close enough that walkers can sleep in the centre and still be on the slope early, which is the arrangement most visitors settle on in a municipality this compact. Fixtures pull in their own direction. Gunpo Sports Town, the Gunpo Civic Sports Plaza and Naeson Sports Park spread the sporting calendar across the city, so a match can be worth a night away from the core.
The neighbours count for something too. Anyang lies north and Ansan to the south and west, with Uiwang bordering as well, which turns a full house in Sanbon New Town into a minor inconvenience rather than a real problem. The kiln ground sits in Sanbon-dong. 군포 산본동 조선백자 요지 preserves where Joseon white porcelain was fired, inside the same district as the new town, so it folds into an ordinary day here for the cost of an hour.

What are the main landmarks in Gunpo?
Surisan heads the list. The mountain and the greenspace around it account for most of what people come to Gunpo to walk, and the built entries are largely sporting. Naeson Sports Park comes first among them.
Gunpo Sports Town and the Gunpo Civic Sports Plaza fill out that side, Pyeongchon Jayu Park adds laid-out parkland to a city otherwise stocked with hillside, and 군포 산본동 조선백자 요지 at Sanbon-dong keeps the one entry that is genuinely old.
What is the history of Gunpo?
Kilns mark the earliest ground. 군포 산본동 조선백자 요지 records where Joseon white porcelain was fired at Sanbon-dong, on land that the same district has since covered with a planned town. Even the spelling has moved. Gunpo was formerly romanized as Kunp'o, a detail that dates a map more precisely than anything standing in the city does.
Rail made the modern place. Three stops on the Gyeongbu Line put the city on a national railway, and lines 1 and 4 of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway tie it to Seoul and to the neighbouring cities around it. Sanbon New Town followed that.
The commercial core was laid out with a pedestrian street of culture through the middle of it, later designated one of the city's eight scenic locations, and the sporting ground at Gunpo Sports Town, the Gunpo Civic Sports Plaza and Naeson Sports Park belongs to the same build-out. Surisan stayed as it was. Close to three quarters of the municipality is still greenspace, so the hills the new town was fitted around continue to take most of the map, and Anyang, Ansan and Uiwang press against what remains.
Where is Gunpo?
Mountains take the larger share. Surisan and the smaller peaks around it leave close to three quarters of Gunpo under greenspace, all of it packed into roughly 36 square kilometres of Gyeonggi-do. Three neighbours close the rest.
Anyang lies north and Ansan to the south and west, Uiwang borders the city as well, and Seoul sits beyond that ring of Gyeonggi municipalities.
What is the climate of Gunpo?
Surisan sets the pattern. Wooded slopes hold a season longer than the built blocks of Sanbon New Town do, so the walking calendar on the mountain and the shopping calendar in the core never quite line up. Greenspace is the whole point here.
The months that make Naeson Sports Park and the hill trails worth a trip are the ones to plan around, and 군포 산본동 조선백자 요지 holds its interest whatever the sky happens to be doing.
How do you get to Gunpo?
Rail does nearly all of it. Lines 1 and 4 of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway connect Gunpo to Seoul and to the cities against its boundary, while three stops on the Gyeongbu Line put it on the national railway as well. Sanbon New Town is the target.
Most arrivals aim for that core, with Anyang immediately north, Ansan to the south and west and Uiwang alongside, all of them close enough to reach without leaving the local network.
