Dębina, Poznań — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Dębina carries the oak floodplain forest of Poznań, a left-bank stretch of the Warta split between Wilda and Zielony Dębiec.

About Dębina

Where to stay in Dębina

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Dębina keeps its beds off the forest floor: the oak park, the infiltration ponds of the water intake and the allotment plots fill nearly all the ground between Droga Dębińska and the Warta. Wilda holds the nearest rooms, in the tenement grid around Rynek Wildecki and along Górna Wilda. Buses 171, 176 and 243 turn round in Dębina.

Stay there if you want a walk to the oaks rather than a taxi. Droga Dębińska runs the whole way.

About Dębina

What are the main landmarks in Dębina?

The river baths stand over the Warta on ulica Piastowska, a Jerzy Tuszowski design in interwar manor style that came back to its pre-war colours in a 2019 overhaul. Oaks do the rest. Roughly 400 oaks a century old and older hold the park, several thick enough at five metres of girth to rank as natural monuments.

Dzieciniec pod Słońcem sits at Droga Dębińska 21, the first Jordan garden built in Poznań, raised in 1927 and 1928 around arcaded pavilions and now the seat of Młodzieżowy Dom Kultury nr 1. Warta Poznań plays down the same road at the ground called Ogródek.

What is the history of Dębina?

Calced Carmelites from the Corpus Christi church held these woods from the 15th century, and Swedish troops stripped more than 300 oaks from them in 1703. The road came for a princess. Droga Dębińska was cut in 1820 so that Ludwika Radziwiłł could reach her villa, and pleasure gardens with names like Columbia and Dolina Szwajcarska followed the traffic out of the city.

Prussia took the land in 1856, the city in 1905. Wells came first and infiltration ponds followed in the 1920s, and the harm they did to the trees brought the Ratować Dębinę campaign of 1929-1931. Poznań protected the woods as an ecological-use area in 1994.

Where is Dębina?

Oxbow lakes pool inside the woods. The Warta runs along the eastern edge, and the trees form part of the southern green wedge that Poznań keeps open along the river.
