Karolin is working ground rather than lodging ground: the power station, the factory halls, and the rail corridor take up nearly all of it. The Poznań Karolin stop stands beside the viaduct where ulica Gdyńska crosses the track, one stop out from Poznań Wschód, and that road runs on north as droga wojewódzka nr 196 towards Murowana Goślina. Line 356 carries on to Czerwonak.
Beds sit outside it, in Główna just south and in Poznań Old Town beyond. Take a room out there if you want dinner within walking distance.

Karolin's heat and power station carries a 200-metre chimney, the tallest structure in Poznań and visible from far outside the city. The works stand at ulica Energetyczna. Factory halls take the ground east of them, and the eastern boundary follows their edge down to ulica Bałtycka, while the elevated line of the northern railway bypass strides across the district and ulica Gdyńska crosses the track on a viaduct.
The Warta closes the western side.
What is the history of Karolin?
Karolin was fought over on 29 January 1945, when the Soviet 244th and 246th regiments took the ground and reached the forefield of Fort IV. Colonel Wasilij Uskow, commanding the 244th, was killed in the attempt to storm it. The fort itself had been raised between 1879 and 1884, one of 18 works in the Prussian ring of the Twierdza Poznań, and it was blown up after the war; its relics are hard to trace.
Then came the power station. Building started about 1970, steam first reached Poznań's heating mains in the middle of that decade, and a railway stop opened in 1983.
Where is Karolin?
Karolin holds the north-eastern corner of Poznań, the Warta down its western side, ulica Chemiczna along the south, and the city limit at Koziegłowy closing the north.
