What are the main landmarks in Sołacz?
The rotunda comes first. Kościół świętego Jana Vianneya, a neoclassical drum under a lantern dome, went up between ulica Podlaska and ulica Mazowiecka in 1928-1930 to a design by Stanisław Mieczkowski. A green wooden tram shelter from 1913 still stands on ulica Małopolska, and Sylwester Ambroziak's Dwie kobiety sits nearby above the ponds.
Villas by Otto Meister ring plac Spiski. Feliks Nowowiejski composed at aleja Wielkopolska 11, and the Salon Muzyczny keeps his rooms there. Collegium Maximum holds the Uniwersytet Przyrodniczy at ulica Wojska Polskiego 28, and a bronze Siewca after Marcin Rożek stands before its door.
What is the history of Sołacz?
A mill came before the villas. Court rolls in Latin name the village in 1389, and a grain mill on the Bogdanka called Sołacki Młyn appears in the record six years later. In 1413 the Świdwa brothers of Szamotuły handed village and mill to the Poznań Dominicans.
Piotr Czarnkowski sold it to the city in 1598-1599. Baruch Elias, a Berlin banker, broke up the estate for building plots from 1896, Joseph Stübben laid out the villa colony in 1906, and the last parcels went in 1913. The whole layout entered the monuments register in 1983.
Where is Sołacz?
The Bogdanka valley holds Sołacz between ulica Niestachowska in the west and ulica Kazimierza Pułaskiego in the east, where the stream drops into a culvert.
