Towns & cities in Jazan Region

Pick a town or city — each links to where to stay.

Jizan is the practical base, the coastal capital where the airport, the port and most hotels sit. From there the region splits three ways. Flat and hot, the Tihamah plain runs along the Red Sea toward the Yemen border.

Behind it the Fifa Mountains climb into cool terraced coffee slopes. Offshore lie the Farasan Islands, reached by the state ferry from Jizan. Stay in Jizan for a first visit; head up to the Fifa Mountains for the highlands, or out to the Farasan Islands for the reefs and beaches.

About Jazan Region

What is Jazan Region known for?

Jazan Region packs mountains, coast and coral islands into one of Saudi Arabia's smallest provinces. It runs about 300 km down the Red Sea, just north of Yemen. Jizan is the coastal capital and its port.

Inland, the terraced slopes of the Fifa Mountains grow Arabica coffee, while the Farasan Islands sit offshore as the country's first protected marine reserve. Little of the rest of the kingdom looks like this.

Where is Jazan Region?

Jazan Region fills the far south-western corner of Saudi Arabia, on the Red Sea just north of the border with Yemen. It is the second smallest of the kingdom's provinces, yet it stacks three landscapes into that narrow space. Along the shore lies the Tihamah, a flat sandy plain built from the silt of seasonal wadis that spill down out of the hills.

Behind the plain the ground rears up. The escarpments of the Sarawat Mountains rise steeply inland, and the Fifa Mountains at their southern end climb into a high wall of terraced ridges. Offshore, the Farasan Islands scatter across the Red Sea as a low coral archipelago of more than 80 islands.

Coral reefs ring them. The region reaches about 300 km down the coast toward Yemen, giving it one of the longest shorelines of any Saudi province. Jizan, the capital, sits on that coast midway along, where the plain meets the sea.

In Jazan, water is what makes the land work. The wadis that drain the Sarawat Mountains keep the Tihamah green enough to farm, and the reefs around the Farasan Islands hold the country's oldest protected waters. Nowhere else does Saudi Arabia press mountain and plain and sea and island so tightly together.

What is Jazan Region like?

Jazan Region feels closer to the Arabian highlands and the Horn of Africa than to the deserts of central Saudi Arabia. Farming defines it. The wadi-fed Tihamah plain yields mango, banana, papaya, and millet, and the region grows tropical fruit that ripens almost nowhere else in the kingdom.

Up in the Fifa Mountains, tribal families have carved the steep slopes into stone terraces, and those terraces have grown Arabica coffee for generations. Coffee is the region's pride. The mountain villages tend stacked round stone houses that cling to the ridgelines above the coffee.

On the coast the mood shifts to the sea. Jizan is a fishing and port city, and its markets carry the day's catch from the Red Sea alongside baskets of highland fruit. Out on the Farasan Islands, old coral-stone houses and Ottoman-era ruins mark centuries of pearling and trade.

Regional dress, music and dialect all lean south, toward Yemen and the wider Red Sea world. This is one of the most distinctive cultural corners of the country.

What is the history of Jazan Region?

Jazan sat for centuries on the caravan and sea routes that hugged the Red Sea coast. Its rulers looked south. In the early twentieth century the Idrisid emirs governed this stretch of shore from the town of Sabya, an independent power on the coast.

The Treaty of Mecca in 1926 drew the Idrisid domain under King Abdulaziz, and after the treaty lapsed, the last Idrisid ruler ceded his authority in 1930. That made Jazan the final region of the Arabian Peninsula to enter Saudi Arabia. Old ties to Yemen still show.

What is the climate of Jazan Region?

The Tihamah coast of Jazan ranks among the hottest, most humid places in Saudi Arabia. Along the Red Sea the summer air turns fierce and sticky, and even winter on the plain stays warm rather than cool. Rain down here is scarce and unreliable.

The Fifa Mountains behind the coast run noticeably cooler and catch far more moisture, which is exactly what lets their terraces hold coffee and fruit where the lowland cannot. Wet monsoon spells feed the wadis in summer and autumn.

How do you get to Jazan Region?

Most people arrive by plane. Most travellers land at Jizan, whose airport carries King Abdulaziz's name and links the region to Riyadh, Jeddah and the wider kingdom. By land, the coast road runs down the Tihamah plain from the north and on toward the Yemen border in the south.

The Farasan Islands are reached from Jizan by a state car ferry across the Red Sea. Inside the region, roads switchback up from the coast into the Fifa Mountains. Jizan is the hinge for all of it.
