Brick arcades ring the interior patios of Barriada Las Moreras, a barrio of Córdoba's Distrito Noroeste rebuilt block by block after 1983.

About Barriada Las Moreras

Where to stay in Barriada Las Moreras

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Soportales run the length of Calle Músico Tomás Luis de Victoria. Barriada Las Moreras went up as public housing, so a stay means a flat inside one of the brick blocks, and the nearest hotel desks are out along Avenida Tenor Pedro Lavirgen in Huerta de la Reina. Coaches leave from Las Margaritas.

Take a flat here if you want a plain Córdoba weekday, the Jardines Federica Montseny for the morning, and the Centro Comercial La Sierra a walk north in Arruzafilla.

About Barriada Las Moreras

What are the main landmarks in Barriada Las Moreras?

The squares are inside the blocks. Each four-storey manzana closes around a patio entered through the arcaded ground floor, and Plaza Patio del Poeta Luis Rosales, Plaza Patio del Pintor Juan Miró, and Plaza Patio Bartolomé Polo y Raigón are three of them. Exposed brick and pitched tile roofs carry across the barriada.

Avenida Don Luis de Cañete runs the northern edge past the Jardines Federica Montseny, and the Colegio de Educación Infantil y Primaria Antonio Gala stands on Calle Músico Tomás Luis de Victoria among the shops.

What is the history of Barriada Las Moreras?

Barriada Las Moreras began in 1963 as a unidad vecinal de absorción, shelters raised in haste for families cleared from Córdoba's shanty settlements. The shelters lasted two decades. From 1983 the Junta de Andalucía rebuilt the barriada outright, following a Plan Parcial drawn by José Miguel Asensio and Jorge Benítez that reused part of the old orthogonal grid so families could cross over in stages.

The Consejería de Obras Públicas y Transportes ran the programme and spread the buildings across seventeen architects, with construction going on to 1993. That decade of work sits in the Registro Andaluz de Arquitectura Contemporánea.

Where is Barriada Las Moreras?

Moreras holds the centre-east of Córdoba's Distrito Noroeste, edged by Arruzafilla north, Huerta de la Reina east, and Las Margaritas south and west. Ground stays flat.
