Electromecánicas is a residential barrio in the Poniente Norte district of Córdoba, laid out by a copper works to house its own employees rather than any visitor. Calle Bilbao runs wide and tree-lined, and Plaza Electromecánicas sets a fountain among orange trees. Brick piers and railings front the plots.
Take a room here if you are driving, want a quiet street rather than the Judería, and do not mind the short run east into the old town.

What are the main landmarks in Electromecánicas?
Electromecánicas is served by the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a yellow-washed building fronted by an arcaded porch of three round arches. A tiled panel of the Virgin hangs above the porch. The Sierra Morena fills the skyline north.
The Hermandad de la Conversión was founded in the barrio, keeps its seat in the church, and walks out on the evening of Good Friday. Plaza Electromecánicas supplies the barrio's other set piece, a brick fountain with a spouted pillar standing among benches, orange trees, and palms.
What is the history of Electromecánicas?
Electromecánicas was raised by SECEM, the copper firm Córdoba knew as la electro, to lodge part of its workforce. The first houses went up at the factory entrance with their own church, school, and economato, and a separate quarter for engineers stood across the access road. Two more followed on the Palma del Río road, the second some 700 metres past the first.
Between them the firm laid out a centro comercial with a second school, a football ground, shops, and a barber. SECEM owned the lot. Company guards patrolled by bicycle and switched the street lamps, until the firm let the houses go and sold them cheaply to their tenants.
