About Poniente Norte

Where to stay in Poniente Norte

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Poniente Norte is a residential district on the west side of Córdoba, made up of five barrios: Parque Azahara, Electromecánicas, Palmeras, Miralbaida and San Rafael de la Albaida. Palmeras stops at open ground. Electromecánicas lies about two kilometres west of the city centre, and Ronda de Poniente closes the district on the east.

Miralbaida lies north of Electromecánicas and east of Palmeras. San Rafael de la Albaida sits apart to the north, by the Carretera de Trassierra. Stay here if you drive, and want the A-431 running west out of the city.

About Poniente Norte

What are the main landmarks in Poniente Norte?

Poniente Norte has its civic centre at the Centro Cívico Vallehermoso on Pasaje Candelaria Heredia, which also holds the district library. The Grupo de viviendas S.E.C.E.M. stands off Avenida de la Fábrica in Electromecánicas, company flats that Andalusia's heritage database catalogues. Viviendas en la barriada Las Palmeras, a second catalogue entry, sits a kilometre west.

The Sevilla railway closes Parque Azahara. The Iglesia de Santa Beatriz de Silva serves that barrio. Castillo de La Albaida and the Canteras de Santa Ana de la Albaida share a name with the San Rafael de la Albaida barrio, but both stand outside the district.

What is the history of Poniente Norte?

Electromecánicas, a barrio of Poniente Norte, is named for the copper works beside it. The Sociedad Española de Construcciones Electromecánicas was founded in 1917 with Spanish and French capital, and the Peñarroya mining company and the Rio Tinto Company Limited both took shares in it. The plant went up west of the city beside the Córdoba to Sevilla and Córdoba to Málaga lines.

Houses at the factory entrance came with a church, a school and an economato, the company store. Guards on bicycles worked the street lamps. The company joined the Ibercobre group in 1978, and the Córdoba works stood whole until 1989-1990.

Where is Poniente Norte?

Poniente Norte sits north of the railway, east of the Arroyo de Cantarranas, and west of the Ronda de Poniente. El Patriarca and El Brillante close the north.
