About Grosseto

The Maremma is the subject here.

What is Grosseto known for?

Museo archeologico e d'arte della Maremma sets out what has been dug from the country around the town, and Museo di storia naturale della Maremma treats that same ground as a natural system rather than an archive of objects. Two further collections sit close by: Museo Collezione Gianfranco Luzzetti with its paintings, and Museo d'arte sacra della diocesi di Grosseto with the works of the diocese.

What are the main landmarks in Grosseto?

Grosseto Cathedral holds the centre, and San Francesco, San Pietro, San Giovanni Battista and Medaglia Miracolosa are spread through the streets around it. Canapone is where people arrange to meet. The Grosseto war memorial, the Monument to the victims of the Grosseto bombings and the Monument to the Fallen of Sterpeto record the twentieth century between them, each fixing a separate loss in stone.

Famiglia a cavallo and the Badilante di Maremma work in another register, and the Giardino dell'archeologia sets older fragments out in open air.

What is the history of Grosseto?

Grosseto's past is easiest to read off its monuments and its collections. Museo archeologico e d'arte della Maremma gathers what the surrounding country has given up, which is the deepest layer the town can put on display, while the Museo d'arte sacra della diocesi di Grosseto carries the record of the church that came after. Grosseto Cathedral belongs to that second stratum.

San Pietro, San Francesco and the monastero della Santissima Annunziata each hold a piece of the same long stretch of religious building, and San Giovanni Battista and Medaglia Miracolosa add to the count. Water shaped another layer. The Cippo idraulico di via Ximenes survives as a marker of the works that made the surrounding ground usable, and the Badilante di Maremma keeps the figure of the labourer who did that digging permanently in view.

A monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi stands among the civic pieces. The twentieth century arrived hard, and the Grosseto war memorial, the Monument to the victims of the Grosseto bombings and the Monument to the Fallen of Sterpeto all mark parts of it. The monument to the aviators of Maremma and a monument to Giacomo Grandoni close the sequence.

Where is Grosseto?

Grosseto administers a great deal of ground. About 474 square kilometres fall inside the comune, which leaves the walkable core of cathedral, museums and the Giardino dell'archeologia as a small fraction of the whole. The Maremma runs on around it.

Toscana holds all of that country, and the two museums carrying the Maremma name treat it as one continuous subject rather than a set of separate places.

What is the climate of Grosseto?

Temperate is the label that fits. The Maremma around Grosseto is open country, so the town takes its weather off that surrounding ground rather than from any shelter of its own, and conditions in the centre differ little from those out in the comune. Seasons turn without extremes.

How do you get to Grosseto?

Distance inside the comune is the thing to plan for. About 474 square kilometres report to Grosseto, so an approach by road can spend a long stretch inside the boundary before the centre appears, with Grosseto Cathedral and its square as the point everything converges on. Viale Manetti carries the sporting traffic.

Via Ximenes runs back past the Giardino dell'archeologia toward the museums, which is the shortest link between the collections.
