What are the main landmarks in Hipódromo?
Hipódromo lists no monuments. Nothing inside the quarter has been written up as a sight, so its fixed points are the parish it belongs to and the streets that run south along the peninsula. The listed ground starts further south.
The Historic Centre of Macau gathers over twenty separate locations, urban squares and streetscapes and churches and temples among them, all of it a ride away from Hipódromo.
What is the history of Hipódromo?
Both names point at horses. Hipódromo is the Portuguese word for a racecourse and Hipódromo the Chinese, a pairing left by the administration that governed Macau until the return to Chinese rule in 1999. Fatima Parish does the same work, carrying Nossa Senhora de Fátima into Chinese characters.
Macau came to China as a special administrative region, and the parish lines drawn under Portugal stayed where they were.
