Franowo works for a living, and the tram loop is what makes it reachable: lines run in past ulica Folwarczna, through the Franowo tunnel under the freight tracks, and on to the centre. Retail carries the rest. Centrum M1 stands at ulica Szwajcarska 14, the brewery runs on the same street, and Franowo Park spreads along ulica Szwedzka with IKEA at its far end. Chartowo, the estate blocks beyond the tunnel, holds the flats and the everyday shops.

What are the main landmarks in Franowo?
A water tower marks the bus loop. Wiadukt Franowo carries ulica Bolesława Krzywoustego for 535 metres over railway line 352 and the tracks of the Franowo yard, a reinforced concrete deck finished in 1977. The tram depot on ulica Folwarczna covers 17 hectares, with roughly 14 km of track inside the fence and a storage hall laid out for a hundred trams.
Old single-family houses still line ulica Klenowska under a street nameplate of the old pattern. Wielkopolska Gildia Rolno-Ogrodnicza sells fruit, vegetables and cut flowers wholesale on the same ground.
What is the history of Franowo?
Franowo came inside the city boundary in 1942, under German occupation, and the occupier laid a marshalling yard across it from nothing. Sorting began in 1943 as Posen Verschiebebahnhof. For a year after the war the yard answered to the name Kobylepole, and Polish railways then enlarged it until it ranked among the most heavily worked points on the national network.
A rebuild laying 45 km of track, 150 turnouts and three new signal boxes was handed over on 8 June 1987. The brewery on ulica Szwajcarska opened in 1980, and hypermarket retail arrived from 1996.
