Slab housing runs the district, so a stay here means a flat on osiedle Lecha, osiedle Czecha, osiedle Rusa or osiedle Tysiąclecia rather than a room off a lobby, with a parking space and a park of ponds thrown in. Two covered tram stops, Piaśnicka Rynek and Piaśnicka Kurlandzka, sit below the street where MPK Poznań trams run through the tunnel from osiedle Lecha out to Franowo. Ulica Szwajcarska draws the eastern edge.

What are the main landmarks in Chartowo?
Fort IIa holds the middle. The brick Zwischenwerk went up between 1887 and 1890 in the Poznań fortress ring, joined the heritage register in 1983, and keeps its dry moat inside a park off ulica Kurlandzka between osiedle Czecha and osiedle Rusa. Saint Mark church stands beside it.
Three more parishes split the estates between them, the Church of First Polish Martyrs built in concrete and clinker by Andrzej Maleszka over osiedle Tysiąclecia, Saint Luke church on osiedle Rusa and Christ the High Priest church at the walkway crossing in the middle of osiedle Lecha. The elliptical Chartowo Tower rises over osiedle Rusa.
What is the history of Chartowo?
A village stood here first. Latin records of the Poznań cathedral chapter name Chartowo in 1245, when a dispute with the people of Środka over pasture fixed its bounds, and the chapter held it while its fields ran down to the Chartynia and the Piaśnica. Then it emptied.
Registers of 1500 and 1516 call the village deserted, its boundary mounds unrepaired and its land worked from Szczepankowo, and Prussia took it after the second partition of 1793. Poznań absorbed Chartowo, by then written Kardorf, in 1940. Slab housing followed from 1974, when work began on osiedle Lecha for the Osiedle Młodych cooperative and spread east.
Where is Chartowo?
Chartowo lies south-east of the Stary Rynek. Ulica Inflancka closes it west, ulica Bolesława Krzywoustego south, and the Malta woods north past ulica Baraniaka.
