What are the main landmarks in Piotrowo?
Piotrowo's landmark is the campus itself, a modernist ensemble spread over both sides of ulica Piotrowo, where two faculties share the address Piotrowo 3. Poligród is the name for that set-apart fragment of the city. The church of Saint Sebastian once stood somewhere on this ground, part timber and part half-timbering under a shingle roof, with a graveyard for the people of Piotrowo around it. The exact site is not known.
Poznań's museum roster lies elsewhere: the Old Market Square and the Royal Castle keep to the left bank, and the Archcathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul to the island of Ostrów Tumski.
What is the history of Piotrowo?
Piotrowo began as a ducal village, handed to Poznań in 1253 with the charter of the left-bank city and worked as its economic hinterland. Town rights followed in 1602. A filial church of Saint Sebastian stood on the ground, burnt in the Swedish Deluge and rebuilt about 1661, and bishop Wojciech Tolibowski consecrated it anew on 20 January 1662.
Józef Rogaliński found the building near collapse in 1781, and the order to pull it down came in 1805. Poznań took Piotrowo inside its boundary in 1896, and the Politechnika Poznańska raised its Faculty of Civil Engineering building on these fields in 1953.
Where is Piotrowo?
Piotrowo lies on the right bank of the Warta between Święty Roch to the south and Berdychowo to the north, with rondo Rataje off its southern corner.
