Osiedle Warszawskie, Poznań — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Large gardens separate the villas of Osiedle Warszawskie, a district of Poznań, Poland, drawn from scratch to Sylwester Pajzderski's 1927 plan.

About Osiedle Warszawskie

Where to stay in Osiedle Warszawskie

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Osiedle Warszawskie is served by trams 6 and 8, which run the length of ulica Warszawska to the Miłostowo loop and call at Krańcowa, Łomżyńska and Mogileńska. Between those stops the streets hold classicizing town villas behind large gardens, not hotel frontage. Krańcowa closes the estate to the west.

The Tunel Łomżyński takes walkers under the road at the middle stop. Jezioro Maltańskie and Poznań Nowe Zoo lie south of ulica Warszawska, outside the estate. Stay here if you want a garden gate and a tram stop instead of a hotel lobby.

About Osiedle Warszawskie

What are the main landmarks in Osiedle Warszawskie?

Osiedle Warszawskie holds two churches built for one congregation. The Cerkiew Opieki Matki Bożej at Toruńska 8 went up as the estate's own Roman Catholic church, a gable-roofed hall under a small bell turret, and Primate August Hlond blessed it on 10 November 1935. The parish outgrew it.

Kościół Chrystusa Odkupiciela replaced it on ulica Czerniejewska, built between 1981 and 1983 to Aleksander Holas's design, and the older building passed to a Greek Catholic parish. The plan's own centre lies where ulica Warszawska meets Łowicka and Kutnowska.

What is the history of Osiedle Warszawskie?

Osiedle Warszawskie was drawn as a self-contained urban unit in 1927 by Sylwester Pajzderski, head of Poznań's city expansion department, after two years of preparation. The model was the garden city, and specifically Żoliborz Oficerski, begun in Warsaw in 1922. Villas went up to the standard patterns of the Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego.

Jerzy Tuszowski's school opened in 1936. It took the name of Józef Piłsudski a year later, and 722 pupils filled 15 classes there in 1938-1939. Irena Bobowska founded the estate's first youth library at the Towarzystwo Czytelni Ludowych.

Where is Osiedle Warszawskie?

Osiedle Warszawskie fills the ground between ulica Krańcowa and ulica Mogileńska north of ulica Warszawska, with Osiedle Pomet to the west and Miłostowo to the east.
