What are the main landmarks in Miłostowo?
Cmentarz Miłostowo covers 98.69 hectares of dune and old fortress ground north of ulica Warszawska, its pine, birch, poplar, and alder planted in the 1940s to hold the sand. Two funeral chapels serve it. One occupies an old polygonal shelter beside the cemetery gate on ulica Gnieźnieńska.
Quarters hold Polish, Soviet and German war dead, and a lapidarium keeps matzevot salvaged from the Jewish cemetery on ulica Głogowska. Fort IIIa took the crematorium in 1993, with Poland's first urn field alongside.
What is the history of Miłostowo?
Poznań absorbed Miłostowo in 1940. German occupation authorities began the cemetery that same year, siting it deliberately away from transport links, and from 1942 Jewish women held in nearby labour camps were forced onto the work. Lager Elektro-Mühle was one such camp, and burials began in 1943.
Older ground lay beneath: Fort IIIa went up between 1887 and 1890 as one of eighteen forts of Twierdza Poznań. The fort carried the name Prittwitz before Polish naming gave it Sułkowski. Graves came here after the war from cleared necropolises in the centre.
