Raszyn, Poznań — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Raszyn is a part of Poznań where villa streets give way to 1960s blocks and Fort VIIIa stands walled inside Park Raszyński.

About Raszyn

Where to stay in Raszyn

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Raszyn I went up as apartment blocks, not as beds for visitors, and the villa streets to the north are private ground, so a bed here is a rented flat rather than a front desk. The tram is the reason to consider it. Trams 1, 6 and 15 run the northern edge along ulica Grunwaldzka, and the Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie grounds sit at the far end of that same street.

Bus 193 reaches Poznań Górczyn. You would choose it for quiet, not for a short walk to the Stary Rynek.

About Raszyn

What are the main landmarks in Raszyn?

Fort VIIIa is the one monument. Prussian engineers raised it between 1887 and 1896 as part of Twierdza Poznań, gave it the name Rohr, and Polish authorities renamed it in 1931 for General Michał Sokolnicki. A dry moat still rings the brick.

The fort stands fenced at ulica Raszyńska, and a lease signed in 2009 turned its interior over to a motorcycle showroom and workshop. Park Raszyński wraps those walls with playgrounds and a sledging hill, and the Kościół Świętej Rodziny closes its western side.

What is the history of Raszyn?

The grid came first. Poznań widened in the 1920s and 1930s, and surveyors cut a fresh street plan across the ground between Górczyn and the old Szosa Grunwaldzka. Names were the reward: Racławicka for 1794, Kłuszyńska for 1610, Raszyńska for the Battle of Raszyn in 1809.

Building followed later. Between 1960 and 1963 the Raszyn I blocks went up to a design by Mirosława Dworzańska, Bogdan Celichowski and Wojciech Kasprzycki, adding 700 apartments; work on Osiedle Kopernika started to the south in 1975.

Where is Raszyn?

Raszyn runs from ulica Grunwaldzka in the north down to ulica Arciszewskiego, with ulica Palacza on the east and ulica Jawornicka on the west.
