Szeląg is thin ground for a bed. The strip between ulica Szelągowska and the Warta gives over to Park Szelągowski, the Dom Weterana standing inside it and the Allianz offices along the road, which leaves the district short of hotel ground. Quiet suits you here.
The top end closes on ulica Serbska and ulica Lechicka, and Most Lecha carries the road east, while the Stare Miasto core lies south down Szelągowska.

What are the main landmarks in Szeląg?
Park Szelągowski runs along the Warta escarpment, where a ringed spring of ferrous water stains the ground rust-red and the ruins of monumental stairs still drop into the valley. The black poplars here reach six metres in girth. A plane tree and an avenue of chestnuts fill out the rest.
The Dom Weterana sits inside the park at ulica Ugory, a terraced late-modernist block built between 1969 and 1972 to designs by Zygmunt Skupniewicz, Witold Milewski and Lech Sternal. Nightingales and beavers turn up too.
What is the history of Szeląg?
Flint tools from the Mazovian cultures came out of this ground, the oldest trace of people anywhere in Poznań, and a burial ground from the first century of our era lies here as well. A princely village called Szydłów stood on the site and appears in Poznań's charter of 1253. Szeląg takes its name from the Szyling merchant family of Poznań, and in 1557 Zygmunt August agreed that the powder works standing here could buy more ground.
The Russian army wrecked it in 1760. Bicycle racing in Poznań began on the Szeląg track in 1895. Poznań took Szeląg inside its boundaries in 1925.
