Chenghua District puts most of its beds along Jianshe Road and in the tower blocks around Chengdu East Railway Station. Jianshe Road is the shopping and eating end, thick with department stores and hotpot counters, and it suits you on a first night when dinner should be a walk instead of a taxi ride. Mengzhuiwan reads differently.
Rooms on that bend of the Fu River look across at the restaurants of Wangping Street and up at the Tianfu Panda Tower. Panda Avenue trades street life for a dawn start at the breeding base.

What are the main landmarks in Chenghua District?
Chenghua District's tallest landmark is the Tianfu Panda Tower, a 339 m broadcast tower over the Mengzhuiwan bend of the Fu River. Zhaojue Temple stands far to the north, a Chan monastery that took its present name in 877 and was rebuilt under the Qing after the Ming collapse levelled it. Chengdu Zoo shares its wall.
Further out along Panda Avenue, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has bred pandas since 1987. Dongjiao Memory fills the old Hongguang electron tube works, where brick sheds and gantry cranes now front music venues.
What is the history of Chenghua District?
Chenghua District dates from 1 January 1991, when Chengdu redrew its urban core into five districts. Its name splices the first character of Chengdu with the first of Huayang, the two old counties whose land the new district was cut from. Before that came the factories.
The state-run Hongguang electron tube works, one of the Soviet-aided projects of the First Five-Year Plan, rose on this ground in 1958 and turned out China's first black-and-white picture tube. Most of those plants moved out after 2000, and the Hongguang site reopened in 2011 as a music park, now Dongjiao Memory.
Where is Chenghua District?
Chenghua District occupies the north-eastern quarter of Chengdu's inner city. The Fu River curves along its south-western edge at Mengzhuiwan, and the Sha River crosses the district from Jinniu District in the north-west down toward Jinjiang District in the south. Longquanyi District takes over eastward. Xindu District closes the northern end, past the Dongfeng Canal and Panda Avenue.
