What carries the name of 郫都区 is a sauce, not a building. Its doubanjiang, a spicy fermented bean sauce, is what Pidu District is known for, and that reputation rests on a condiment rather than on anything Chengdu could mark on a tourist map. Tobacco held that role first, and the leaf cut on this ground was once reckoned the best in Sichuan.

Neither is a thing to queue for. Anyone after monuments rides back into the parent city; anyone after the reason this district is known at all goes to the sauce.

What is the history of Pidu District?

The district is young; the ground under it is not. Pi County was the name on this ground until the State Council approved its conversion on 24 November 2016, and Pidu District is what came out of that order. What changed was the label.

Tobacco had already given way to the sauce trade by then, so the reputation that Sichuan attaches to 郫都区, first for its leaf and later for doubanjiang, ran on across the boundary change without interruption. Chengdu simply gained a district where it had counted a county.
