About Wenjiang District

Where to stay in Wenjiang District
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Wenjiang District sits at the end of the Chengdu Metro, where Line 4 stops at Wansheng and runs no further west. That extension opened on 2 June 2017, and it put the district within one ride of the centre, which is where the hotel desks of Chengdu are. Out here the ground is campus and farmland instead.
Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine keeps its main campus at 1166 Liutai Avenue, and a bed out here buys proximity to that rather than to the old city. Stay only if your errand is here.
About Wenjiang District
What are the main landmarks in Wenjiang District?
Wenjiang District keeps its oldest landmark under a crop field. The Yufu Village Site is a Baodun culture walled settlement, its outer earthwork a rough hexagon of about forty hectares around a second wall. The State Council listed it in 2001.
At Shou'an in the northwest corner stands the Chen Family Mansion, twelve courtyards of chuandou timber framing behind the paired gate flagpoles that give it the name Chenjia Weigan. Chen Zongdian began it in 1864. The Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Wenjiang Campus Gymnasium, off Liutai Avenue, took basketball and volleyball at the World University Games of 2023.
What is the history of Wenjiang District?
Wenjiang District was the seat of a prefecture that once ran its neighbours. The prefecture named for it was set up in 1950 with the commissioner's office in the county town, and at its widest it took in fourteen counties across the plain west of Chengdu, Pi County and Shuangliu among them. Jintang and Shuangliu were handed to Chengdu in 1976.
March 1983 dissolved the prefecture outright, folded its remaining twelve counties into Chengdu, and left the old prefectural seat a satellite town. The county name lasted nineteen more years. Wenjiang District dates from 14 April 2002.
Where is Wenjiang District?
Wenjiang District covers 277 square kilometres of the Chengdu Plain, bounded by the Jinma River in the west, Qingyang District east, and Pidu District north.
