Krzyżowniki hides its best-known structure under a villa at ulica Słupska 62. The Shelter of the Mayor of Poznań was cut there at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s as a civil defence command post, some 500 square metres of telephone exchange, offices, and command floor. Its existence stayed secret until 2000, and the first tour groups went down on 13 December 2012.

A cholera cemetery opened opposite ulica Słupska 95 about 1831, served the epidemics that swept Poznań through the nineteenth century, and was cleared after 1949. One pine marks the spot.

What is the history of Krzyżowniki?

Krzyżowniki belonged to the Poznań commandery of the Hospitallers, and the Maltese cross on their cloaks gave the village its name. A Latin document of 1388 spells it Crziszewniky. Excavation has turned up pottery, a whetstone, an iron knife, and animal bones of the ninth to eleventh centuries.

Commanders Olbracht and Bogusz went to law in 1405 and 1406 against Jakusz Prusiecki over where Krzyżowniki ended and Strzeszyn began. Fire had gutted it by 1510. Prussia annexed the village in 1793, the German administration pulled it into Poznań in 1940, and Polish law fixed the city boundary around it on 1 January 1951.
