Prachuap Khiri Khan is Thailand's slender coastal province on the Gulf of Thailand, where the country narrows to barely 11 km wide.
About Changwat Prachuap Khiri Khan

Towns & cities in Changwat Prachuap Khiri Khan
Pick a town or city — each links to where to stay.
Most visitors base themselves in Hua Hin, the old royal resort with the widest choice of hotels and the easiest run from Bangkok. Pick it for beaches and golf. Pran Buri, just south, trades the crowds for mangrove quiet and boutique stays along the Pranburi River.
The provincial capital of Prachuap Khiri Khan, further down the coast beneath Khao Chong Krachok, rewards travellers who care more about fresh seafood and the curve of Ao Manao than about resort polish. Go further still, to Bang Saphan, if you want empty sand and almost no foreign company.
About Changwat Prachuap Khiri Khan
Hua Hin made this province famous.
What is Changwat Prachuap Khiri Khan known for?
Thailand's first proper beach resort grew up here in the 1920s, when the royal family built summer palaces on the Gulf of Thailand and the southern railway carried Bangkok society down to the sand. South of it, the limestone towers of Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park rise straight out of coastal marsh and shrimp ponds. The province is known too for grilled seafood, sweet pineapple, and quiet town beaches that see far fewer foreign visitors than the islands further south.
Where is Changwat Prachuap Khiri Khan?
Prachuap Khiri Khan runs down the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand, a long ribbon of a province on the Kra Isthmus, the neck of land that joins mainland Asia to the Malay Peninsula. It is narrow. At one point only 11 km separate the sea from the Tenasserim Hills and the border with Myanmar, one of the slimmest waists in all of Thailand. Phetchaburi lies to the north, Chumphon to the south, and the whole province lies some 240 km down the coast from Bangkok.
The land itself is mostly a thin coastal plain. Behind the beaches it climbs quickly into forested hills that mark the Tenasserim range and the frontier, so the province is wider on the map than it feels on the ground. Off the capital the shoreline folds into three curved bays, Ao Noi, Ao Prachuap, and Ao Manao, which give the town its old nickname of Mueang Sam Ao, the city of three bays.
Limestone headlands and offshore islets punctuate the coast, and to the south the marshes and tidal flats of Khao Sam Roi Yot spread behind a wall of sudden karst peaks.
What is Changwat Prachuap Khiri Khan like?
This is a coast Thais claim as their own. Hua Hin has been the summer address of the royal family and Bangkok's elite for a century, and Klai Kangwon Palace, whose name means 'far from worries', still stands above its beach. That royal seal set the tone.
The province draws weekend crowds from the capital rather than the international party trade of the southern islands, and its resorts lean toward quiet golf, spa, and family sand rather than full-moon noise. Away from the resorts, the older rhythms hold. Fishing towns line the three bays, their boats bringing in squid and mackerel that fill the night markets and the seafront grills of the provincial capital.
Inland, the low hills give way to pineapple fields and coconut groves that feed much of the country, farm work that has shaped daily life far longer than any resort or golf course. Buddhism runs through it all: the gilded temple of Wat Thammikaram crowns Khao Chong Krachok above the town, its stairway patrolled by a resident troop of monkeys. Thai is the language of daily life here, softened by a southern lilt.
What is the history of Changwat Prachuap Khiri Khan?
The province's modern story begins with the railway. Thailand's southern line reached the coast at Hua Hin in 1911, and over the following decade the fishing village grew into the kingdom's first seaside resort. King Prajadhipok built the summer palace of Klai Kangwon there between 1926 and 1933.
War came next. On the morning of 8 December 1941 Japanese troops landed at Ao Manao by the provincial capital, and Thai airmen and police held them off in a short, fierce fight before the government ordered a ceasefire.
What is the climate of Changwat Prachuap Khiri Khan?
Prachuap Khiri Khan runs hot all year, with a tropical wet-and-dry climate typical of the upper Gulf of Thailand. The driest, coolest stretch falls between December and February, when sea breezes take the edge off the heat and rain is scarce. Then the monsoon turns.
October and November are the wettest months by far, when the retreating northeast monsoon drags moisture in off the gulf and drops it along this shore. The narrow strip of land keeps the province drier than the Andaman coast on the far side of the peninsula.
How do you get to Changwat Prachuap Khiri Khan?
Most travellers come down from Bangkok, roughly 240 km to the north. The southern railway, the same line that made Hua Hin, still runs the length of the province and stops at both Hua Hin and the capital. Trains take longer than the road.
Highway 4, Thailand's Phetkasem Road, carries the buses and minivans that link the towns, while Hua Hin's small airport handles a handful of domestic flights. Many visitors simply fly into Bangkok and drive or ride the rails south along the Gulf of Thailand.
