Wikipedia readership shows where people's curiosity goes. We counted how often the articles about the towns of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland are read, across all the language editions of Wikipedia, using the open QRank dataset.
Small towns, large curiosity
In three of the five Nordic countries, the fifth most-read town is a place of fewer than twenty thousand people. Kiruna is read more than Lund, Västerås and Linköping. Narvik beats Tromsø. Billund, the home of Legoland, outranks both Roskilde and Esbjerg.
| Country | Town | Population | Readership (QRank) | Larger towns it outranks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sweden | Kiruna | 17,037 | 710,782 | Lund, Västerås, Örebro, Linköping |
| Norway | Narvik | 14,141 | 389,917 | Tromsø, Kristiansand, Drammen |
| Denmark | Billund | 6,725 | 264,778 | Roskilde, Esbjerg, Randers |

The most-read towns in each country
Capitals lead everywhere. The next places mostly follow population, until the Arctic appears. Rovaniemi, on the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland, is read more often than Oulu, a city more than three times its size.

Readership per resident
Dividing readership by population turns the list upside down. Small towns at the end of a road, on a border or under a mountain take over. Kirkenes sits by the Russian border, Honningsvåg below the North Cape and Kiruna in iron-ore country, while Åre is a ski resort and Skagen marks the northern tip of Denmark.
| Rank | Town | Population | Readership per resident |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sweden #1 | Kiruna | 17,037 | 42 |

What this measures
QRank counts how often each Wikipedia article is viewed across every language edition. It measures curiosity, not visits. The dataset is a snapshot from March 2024, and population figures come from GeoNames, so both drift over time. The smallest towns are left out of the tables, since a handful of readers would dominate their ratio.
